Don’t delay if you have a stroke

THE ANSWER that stroke attacks only happen to older people and do not need to worry young people is completely wrong, because the bad news can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender.
Every year, more than 50,000 new cases of stroke or stroke are recorded in Malaysia and it continues to increase from year to year.
Now the risk of stroke among young people is increasing and is quite worrying.
Maybe around 20 years ago we often heard of people who had a stroke at the age of 40 or 50 years old, but now it can not only happen to children but also in the age of 20 to 30 years
Even so, quick action to get treatment after a stroke or stroke may give the patient a chance to recover.
Unexpected stroke attacks that delay treatment can cause permanent limb paralysis to the patient.
Pantai Neurologist at Penang Hospital, Dr. Wong Yee Choon said that the condition was caused by the narrowing of blood vessels to the brain or due to ruptured blood vessels.
As a result, part of the brain tissue suffers damage due to lack of oxygen supply.
“A stroke occurs when the brain loses its blood supply either because blood vessels are blocked (thrombosis), blood vessels are narrowed (stenosis) or blood vessels burst which causes bleeding in the brain.
“It is divided into two types which are strokes caused by blocked blood vessels to the brain or due to bleeding in the organ,” he said.
He said that one of the main reasons that cause a person to have a stroke is due to high blood pressure.
According to him, continuous high blood pressure will damage blood vessels throughout the body but this effect is more on delicate blood vessels such as in the brain and increases the risk of blood vessel blockage.
He added that high cholesterol in the body is also the biggest contributor to the increased risk of stroke.
“This cholesterol will accumulate in the walls of the blood vessels which over time cause the vessels to narrow and then become blocked.
“In addition, the habit of smoking is also one of the unhealthy lifestyle practices that is the main cause of stroke because it can cause blood vessels to become blocked and further damage their function,” he said.
Commenting further on the disease which is the third killer of Malaysians after heart attack and pneumonia, Dr. Wong said that those who are at risk need to know the signs that will occur when they are having a stroke.
Among the signs that can be detected such as weakness and numbness on one side of the body, face, arms and legs; difficulty speaking or slurred speech, blurred vision and severe headache.
He explained that the symptoms will occur suddenly and worsen.
“Stroke is an emergency and every minute is very precious for the patient. So as soon as possible, quick action must be taken to take the patient to the nearest hospital.
“When arriving at the hospital, the doctor will use a brain image scan technique, either Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to determine the type of stroke experienced by the patient,” he said.
Dr. Wong said, by getting quick treatment and following the rehabilitation process, stroke patients can fully recover as before. – Malaysian Weekly
