Do not beg for funds for sick children

MELAKA: A married couple expressed their displeasure at the bureaucratic red tape and strict conditions imposed by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) when applying for funds for their child’s treatment.

Speak to Utusan Malaysia, Rosniza Hussin, 41, said that many parties came forward to help her son, Muhammad Farhan Mohd. Fadly, 17, who was diagnosed with kidney failure since 10 years ago.

However, he said, the strict conditions and procedures caused him and his husband, Mohd. Fadly Zakaria, 43, is getting discouraged to apply for the funds that have been collected over the past few months.

“They asked us to fill out a form online and submit various documents for verification. They once visited and saw for themselves the condition of my son who was lying sick, we did not want to deceive.

“The letter of proof from the hospital has also not convinced them enough. Funds amounting to more than RM4,000 were successfully collected in the name of the child, but only one withdrawal was made, amounting to RM208 to buy Muhammad Farhan’s needs.

“About RM1,000 a month is needed to buy special milk, disposable diapers and medicine. I had to quit my job earlier this month to take care of my children and my husband working for a wage repairing motorcycles. Our income is very limited,” he said when met at his home in Peringgit here.

The story of Muhammad Farhan was reported by this newspaper last August, who requested public donations amounting to RM12,000 to undergo the installation of a site for washing blood at a private hospital in Johor.

Rosniza added, the procedure had to be postponed because it did not have enough funds.

He said, there are NGOs willing to fully finance the cost, but the bureaucracy, including from the hospital, makes it difficult for Muhammad Farhan to get treatment.

“The NGO involved asked for hospital documents while the hospital did not issue a letter without going through the procedure first. Simply put, we pay first, then the hospital will issue a letter. If I can, I don’t ask for funds.

“Muhammad Farhan has now had to be put to sleep since Monday because his lungs are swollen and his heart is weak. I am saddened to see the condition of him who continues to fight for life, but is denied by things like this,” he explained.

People who want to help can donate through a Maybank account in the name of Mohd. Fadly Zakaria (104022886422). – MESSENGER
