COPENHAGEN: A total of 50,000 chickens were destroyed following the spread of the bird flu epidemic on farms in western Denmark.
According to a Xinhua daily report, the Head of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) Section, Lotte Brink, said that the farm animals were actually infected with the dangerous bird flu virus which is H5N1.
As an initial step, he said, his party had to destroy 50,000 chickens within a few days.
“Our goal is to reduce the suffering of the farm animals in addition to preventing the spread of the epidemic,” he said.
The virus was first detected on New Year’s Eve after several chickens were found dead on a farm near the town of Orum in Hedensted Municipality, about 177 kilometers west of Copenhagen.
Last Monday, the DVFA listed the area within 10 kilometers of the farm as a Prohibited Zone, any production of eggs or poultry without a permit is strictly prohibited.
The bird flu outbreak is the fourth since October and the largest so far, according to the country’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. – MESSENGER
