DOHA : Belgium chose a difficult path to be in the best 16 group of the 2022 World Cup after a sudden 0-2 defeat at the hands of Morocco in the second stage of Group F, at the Al Thumama Stadium, just now.
Narrowly winning 1-0 against Canada in the first action before, Roberto Martinez’s men did not have to wait until the last game of the group stage if they had won three points but the result was the opposite.
Both teams came down with a mission to find victory where Belgium wanted to win their second while Morocco was looking for their first win after a goalless draw against Croatia.
Belgium’s chance came through Kevin De Bryune in the 16th minute but his shot was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
The long-awaited goal was finally scored by Morocco through Hakim Ziyech in injury time of the first half, but the referee disallowed the goal after an inspection through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) found that the Moroccan player was in an offside position.
The continuation of the second half showed Morocco’s continuous efforts to hunt for a goal and it resulted through Abdelhamid Sabiri in the 73rd minute.
Zakaria Aboukhlal also did not miss to mark his name as the second goal scorer for the team at the end of extra time in the second half to ensure three absolute points for the team.
This victory puts Morocco at the top of Group F with four points after two matches while Belgium is in second place. -AGENCIES
