KUALA TERENGGANU: A former member of the Terengganu government body and his wife were remanded for five days starting today to assist in the investigation into the case of abuse of power and false claims.
The remand order for the 63- and 40-year-old married couple was issued by Magistrate Noor Mazrinie Mahmood at the Kuala Terengganu Magistrate’s Court here, today.
The man involved is believed to have abused his authority in relation to the appointment of his wife’s company as a zakat collector which allowed him to receive a commission of up to RM600,000.
The suspect committed the offense in 2019 under Section 23(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 before being arrested while testifying at the MACC Office, yesterday.
If convicted, the suspect can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000 whichever is higher.
The second suspect is suspected of making a claim because he is believed to have false matan details between 2020 and 2021 according to Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
Previously, the woman involved was arrested at her company’s office in this city at about 2.30 pm, last Tuesday.
Both suspects are represented by lawyers Abdul Haiyyi Salim and Datuk Fariz Irwan Mustafa. – MESSENGER
