PETALING JAYA: Rumors that UMNO is expected to amend the party’s constitution to prevent the two highest positions of President and Deputy President from being contested, are alleged to be fabricated by opposing parties that aim to divide UMNO’s leadership.
UMNO’s Head of Information, Isham Jalil said, this is because the positions of President and Deputy President of UMNO can still be contested by any individual who wishes to grab the main position.
He said, the party has never amended its constitution to prevent the two positions from being contested or unchallenged in the next election.
“In UMNO, we cannot stop people from running without amending the constitution. That’s why, if we amend the constitution so that the positions of President and Deputy President are not contested, everyone will be angry.
“The grassroots will be angry. Who is angry? Angry President and Deputy President. Angry Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan because they are very greedy for power.
“We also know, (individual) number one (President) and number two (Deputy President) also know this. We are not very stupid,” he said through a video recording shared on his Facebook.
Commenting further, Isham claimed, what is more disappointing is when the narrative is welcomed by some leaders in the party itself, especially those who tend to form cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“We want to stay to recover the party or we want to raise people (UMNO leaders who) support Muhyiddin and PN. If they change the leadership above, they compete (and win), the government collapses.
“Because they want to take us to PN. One of the ways to bring down the current government, he has to change the decision makers above. He has to change number one and two parties.
“If he changes number one and two, he can change these 30 Members of Parliament brought there. So, when we go there, our government collapses. We will return to the era of the Sheraton Steps,” he said.
In that regard, Isham explained, the issue of the main position not being contested in this election does not arise due to the power to choose the new UMNO leadership later rests with the mandate of the party members who choose it later.
“The decision is in the hands of the members. The last date for us to make the election is May 19, 2023. So, that means we have four months for the branch-level election, the division reaches the top,” he explained. – MESSENGER
