JAKARTA: A husband and wife, aged 36 and 24 respectively, were arrested by the police after allegedly making banking transactions using phones found on the side of the road.
The married couple transferred money amounting to 120 million rupiah (RM34,045) using a banking application found in a smartphone they found in South Jakarta.
A few hours after committing the act, both husband and wife were arrested at Pasar Senen Station, Central Jakarta.
The police spokesperson, Mashuri, said the couple had just gotten married.
“The incident started after they found a Samsung Galaxy A3 type smartphone in an area in Mampang.
“After opening the phone, they found the Bank Republik Indonesia (BRI) Mobile banking application and managed to access it through the forgotten password method.
“The husband and wife then transferred money amounting to 120 million rupiah to the wife’s account,” he said as reported by Kompas.com.
Mashuri explained, the owner of the mobile phone then made a police report after realizing his phone was missing, in addition to receiving a notification about the money transfer.
Police managed to arrest both suspects based on banking information.
The police also confiscated four mobile phones, three ATM cards, six pieces of gold jewelery and five million rupiah (RM1,418) in cash when the couple was arrested.
