GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) received data from China showing 218,019 new cases of Covid-19 infection in the week up to January 1.
The data also showed a total of 648 new deaths from the country including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.
During the same period, a total of nine deaths were reported at China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The data received by the WHO also shows an increase in infections of almost 50 percent in the period in question.
Earlier, the United Nations (UN) health agency was said not to have received any data from China in the past few weeks after Beijing withdrew its Zero Covid policy at the beginning of last month.
The action raises doubts among health experts that there is a possibility of hidden information regarding the spread of the epidemic.
The WHO said gaps in data may be due to Chinese authorities simply struggling to count cases.-AGENCIES
